A post-doctoral research fellowship (SKO/ post code 1352) on the molecular and morphological analysis of archaeological bone, at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation, and History (IAKH) in collaboration with the Department of Biology (BIO), University of Oslo (UiO).

About the Departments: http://www.hf.uio.no/iakh/english/ ? and ?http://www.bio.uio.no/index_en.html

The successful applicant will work within the larger project Thanatos: Dead bodies ? live data. A study of funerary material from the Hellenistic-Roman-Byzantine town Hierapolis in Phrygia, Turkey.

Since 2007, IAKH has been engaged in an archaeological project in Turkey, under the direction of the Italian-led ?Missione archeologica italiana a Hierapolis di Frigia? at a Roman necropolis in the ancient city of Hierapolis (close to the modern village of Pamukkale, Denizli), a city which has been excavated annually by the Italian team since 1957.

Due to the remarkable richness of funerary materials, the necropolis at Hierapolis offers a unique opportunity to investigate the social organization of an urban population over a period that encompasses the Roman, Byzantine, and early Turkish periods of Asia Minor. The project will include studies on funerary architecture and landscape perception, funerary organization and entrepreneurship, funerary practices and rituals, mortuary behaviour, genetic relationships and the geographical origin of buried individuals, patterns of mobility, paleo-demography, health and disease, diet, and behaviour. The overall project proposes to apply the latest methods in GIS-surveying, ancient DNA analysis, isotope analysis, and C14 dating. A postdoctoral research fellowship has already been announced in Classical Archaeology. It is expected that the two research associates will work in close collaboration.

The successful candidate will be responsible for analysis of human bone samples and studies of ancient DNA data, including preparation of samples for isotope analysis. Therefore, candidates should have experience in ancient DNA research and a strong interest in other techniques related to the study of archaeological bone.

The successful candidate will undertake field research in Turkey during the excavation seasons (late July to late September), and will be expected to participate actively in the scholarly initiatives of the Thanatos project. For a more detailed description of the project, see http://www.hf.uio.no/iakh/forskning/forskningsprosjekter/hierapolis/english/index.html

The 3-year post-doctoral fellowship is funded by the Norwegian Research Council and is associated with the project Thanatos, described above (project no. 196827/V20).

The position contains a 10% component of teaching and administration, and will be administered by IAKH, while BIO will offer laboratory facilities.
