1 Postdoctoral Research Position & 3 PhD Scholarships within Human-Centered Computing at Department of Computer Science University of Copenhagen

Postdoctoral Research Position within Information Visualization on Large Displays
The Human Centered-Computing Group at the Department of Computer Science (DIKU), University of Copenhagen, Denmark, seeks a postdoctoral researcher for the project “WallViz – Improving decision making from massive data collections using wall-sized, highly interactive visualizations”.

The position is financed by the Programme Committee on Growth Technologies under the Danish Strategic Research Council. The WallViz project is a collaboration between the Departments of Computer Science at University of Copenhagen (DIKU) and Aarhus University, the Danish Ministry of Interior & Health, Microsoft and Autodesk. The project will aim to better decision making in these organizations by improving database techniques to provide fast responses to ad-hoc user queries and by using highly interactive wall-sized visualizations that allow fast-paced interactive and collaborative exploration of massive data collections.

Specifically, the postdoctoral researcher will work with adapting and re-inventing existing information visualization techniques for large displays and with evaluating these techniques in laboratory and field studies.

The position is for two years and the appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations (https://www.retsinformation.dk/Forms/R0710.aspx?id=121507).

At the Department of Computer Science, 4 faculty members and 3 PhD are working within the project. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to perform research in close collaboration with them.

Qualifications
The successful applicant will have a background in computer science or similar, with a solid background in human-computer interaction or visualization. The successful applicant has (a) documented expertise in visualization, visual analytics, information visualization, or a similar field, and (b) documented expertise in user-centred design and evaluation, or similar activities. Previous experience with large displays, for instance interaction techniques for large displays, is an advantage, but not required.

Submission of applications
The application must be in the form of a single PDF file and contain:

Curriculum Vitae incl. list of publications
Up to three of the candidate´s scientific publications for evaluation
An initial project proposal outlining what the applicant would like to achieve during the period as a post doc (maximum two pages)
PhD assessment committee´s provisional or final evaluation
A copy of the PhD diploma

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, religion and ethnic background are invited to apply. The application must be submitted by e-mail tocamillaj@diku.dk and be received no later than 31 January 2011 at 12.00 noon CET.

PhD scholarship within Interaction Techniques for Wall-Sized Displays

The Human Centered-Computing Group at the Department of Computer Science (DIKU), University of Copenhagen, Denmark invites applications for a PhD scholarship within Interaction Techniques for Wall-Sized Displays.

The position is financed by the Programme Committee on Growth Technologies under the Danish Strategic Research Council. The WallViz project is a collaboration between the Departments of Computer Science at University of Copenhagen (DIKU) and Aarhus University, and three partner organizations: the Danish Ministry of Interior & Health, Microsoft and Autodesk. The project will aim to better decision making in these organizations by improving database techniques to provide fast responses to ad-hoc user queries and by using highly interactive wall-sized visualizations that allow fast-paced interactive and collaborative exploration of massive data collections.

The candidate will be working on interaction techniques for wall-sized displays, in particular techniques that support collaboration and fluid exploration of “what if” scenarios and alternatives. Tracking, multi-touch, and other means of input all form part of the project´s focus.

The PhD project will mainly be carried out at the Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen, under the supervision of Professor Kasper Hornbæk. The salary and appointment terms are according to the current agreement for PhD students (https://www.retsinformation.dk/Forms/R0710.aspx?id=121507). The appointment is for a period of 3 years and must lead to a dissertation.

Qualifications
The candidate is expected to hold an MSc in computer science or similar. The successful candidate will document (a) good programming/technical skills, (b) experience with advanced interaction techniques, and (c) potential to work closely with the prospective users of the interaction technologies (in particular, the two Danish partner organizations).

Submission of applications
Applicants are requested to submit their application by filling in Part 1 of the application form that can be downloaded from “Application for scholarship and admission”:http://www.science.ku.dk/phd/applying/forms/

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, religion and ethnic background are invited to apply. The application form and requested enclosures along with a motivation letter (maximum two pages) must be submitted as a single pdf-file toPhDapplications@diku.dk and be received no later than 31 January 2011 at 12.00 noon CET.

PhD scholarship within Software Architecture/Software Ecosystems

The Human Centered-Computing Group at the Department of Computer Science (DIKU), University of Copenhagen, Denmark invites applications for a PhD scholarship within software architecture/software ecosystems.

The PhD student will focus on software architecture design and prototyping in relation to a health service platform that connects home, work, and healthcare providers. The intention with the platform is to provide the basis for a “software ecosystem”, a set of software solutions that enable and support the activities in a domain through the organizations that provide these solutions. In this PhD project, the primary domain is telemedicine and a main technical challenge is to design an ecosystem for this domain that allows flexible combination of telemedicine and general healthcare services much in the same way as enabled by the Android Market and similar application stores.

The PhD project will be carried out in connection to the Net4Care (http://www.caretechinnovation.dk) and Connect2Care (http://www.pervasivehealthcare.dk/) projects.

The PhD project will mainly be carried out at the Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen, under the supervision of Professor Klaus Marius Hansen.
